What Actually Matters Most
Of everything marketed for skin health, daily sun protection has by far the strongest evidence for slowing visible skin ageing and reducing skin cancer risk. A broad-spectrum SPF30–50, applied daily regardless of weather, is the single most effective, evidence-based step available.
Smoking & Skin Ageing
Smoking accelerates skin ageing through reduced blood flow and collagen breakdown, contributing to premature wrinkling and a dull, uneven complexion — independent of its effects on surgical wound healing (see Pre-Operative Optimisation). Stopping smoking benefits skin quality at any age.
Topical Retinoids
Topical retinoids (including prescription tretinoin and over-the-counter retinol) have good evidence for improving fine lines, skin texture and pigmentation with consistent long-term use. They can cause initial dryness and irritation, so are usually introduced gradually, and must be used with daily sun protection as they increase sun sensitivity. Suitability depends on your skin type and any planned procedures — worth discussing at consultation.
A Simple, Evidence-Based Routine
- A gentle, non-stripping cleanser suited to your skin type
- A daily moisturiser appropriate to your skin (dry, oily or combination)
- Broad-spectrum SPF30–50 every morning, reapplied if outdoors for extended periods
- A topical retinoid at night, if suitable and tolerated, introduced gradually
- Simplicity over complexity — a small number of well-evidenced products, used consistently, generally outperforms an elaborate routine
Where Mr Naparus Is Cautious
Many "skin longevity" claims in the wellness and skincare industry outpace the evidence behind them. This is especially true of clinics marketing injectable "stem cell therapy" — see our page on nanofat grafting for the important distinction between this and Mr Naparus's own, minimally-processed autologous technique. Mr Naparus does not offer synthetic dermal fillers or thread lifts, and favours autologous fat grafting as a longer-lasting, evidence-based alternative where volume restoration is genuinely indicated — see Aesthetic Procedures. If a product or treatment claims dramatic results with no supporting evidence, that claim is worth questioning.
Lifestyle Factors
General health measures — adequate sleep, hydration, a balanced diet, moderate alcohol intake and regular exercise — support skin quality as part of overall health, though their individual effect on skin ageing is more modest than sun protection, smoking cessation and topical retinoid use.
When to Seek Advice
Any new or changing mole, or a lesion that bleeds, crusts or will not heal, should be assessed rather than treated with skincare — see Skin Cancer Excision & Reconstruction.
